Mourning tragic loss of Lonmin Miners

Mourning tragic loss of Lonmin Miners

21 August 2012

The ANC Limpopo joins the families, friends, colleagues of victims of the Lonmin Mine tragedy and the rest of the country in mourning the untimely deaths of the mine employees.

The small mining town, located between Rustenburg and Britz in the NorthWest Province, lost their lives fighting for remuneration and benefits justly due to them.

We are the first to admit as the ANC Limpopo that the inequality gaps and extreme levels of poverty leading to the kind of socio-economic desperation experienced by large portions of our population on daily basis; is the underlying reason that led to this sad and dark experience.

Clear, unambiguous steps need to be taken by leaders, both in government and the private sector; to vigorously pursue economic transformation at an unparalleled pace if a repeat of this kind of senseless massacre is to be avoided.

Socio-economic problems will never be resolved through heavily armed police forces, the army and enquiry of any form but by political will of visionary leaders committed to genuinely addressing issues and challenges facing workers and the society at large.

That way the "Better Life for All" philosophy will have meaning to all citizens.

We join loved ones and dependants of the deceased in saluting their lives to the struggle to realise economic emancipation for hardworking, impoverished communities in South Africa.

Television scenes showing us the horror experienced by the Lonmin Mine workers last week will remain engraved in our memories.
